It's Not A Festival - it is a co-created event. It's not a ticket - it is a membership The Borderland is pretty much the exact opposite of most "festivals" Why do we insist on it not being a festival, on it being a membership not a ticket. Why is this important? The answer is: to avoid misunderstandings. To avoid a few people turning up with misguided expectations and making a mess of it and possibly ending up being a danger to themselves, others or the event. To the uninformed eye, the Borderland could be mistaken for a festival - in the sense that it is a temporary gathering of people in tents (like other unlike events such as Glastonbury, or a Scout Jamboree). On all other parameters, the Borderland is pretty much the exact opposite of most "festivals". Who is responsible? Most festivals: "the organizers" ❥ Borderland: you are. What's the entertainment? Most festivals: "the organizers" took your money and chose and paid professional, known bands to entertain you ❥ Borderland: you brought the entertainment. If you didn't, there is none. We are all co-creators, not consumers. Bring an artful outfit so awesome just seeing you will make someone's day! Is there drinking water? Most festivals: yes, "the organizers" solved it for you ❥ Borderland: we don't know. Only if some co-creators exactly like you stepped up and solved it. Can I buy food/stuff? Most festivals: yes, "the organizers" feed you for money ❥ Borderland: no, you cannot buy anything. You must be radically self reliant. Organize your own food, drink, shelter, fire extinguisher, communal space etc. Bring Your Own Cup - all camps bars will serve you, no money involved. Bring some bottles of your favorite drink to gift to the bars. Are there toilets? Most festivals: yes, "the organizers" solved it for you ❥ Borderland: Only because some co-creators exactly like you stepped up and solved it. Are there trash cans? Most festivals: yes, "the organizers" solved it ❥ Borderland: No - carry your own damn trash out! Don't let it hit the ground! This is a Leave No Trace event! All participants carry a small MOOP (Matter Out Of Place [=trash]) bag on their belt. Is there electricity? Most festivals: yes, "the organizers" solved it for you ❥ Borderland: we don't know. Only if some co-creators exactly like you stepped up and solved it. Is there street lighting? Most festivals: yes ❥ Borderland: No, be self-reliant, you are the lighting, make sure you are lit up at night! Is there parking? Most festivals: yes, "the organizers" solved it for you ❥ Borderland: we don't know. Only if some co-creators exactly like you stepped up and solved it. I paid for a ticket I have rights: Most festivals: sue "the organizers" ❥ Borderland: you got this upside down. You paid for membership of a club (forening) and in doing so signed up as a co-creator of this event. You are responsible. The other people involved are co-creators exactly like you. Want to see an organizer? Look in the mirror. I can get beastly drunk and it is someone else's responsibility I can't get hurt. Most festivals: "the organizers" have put up fences and hired security to try and prevent you hurting yourself ❥ Borderland: you are responsible for you. There are also Clown Police and Sanctuary (first aid) who try to take care of everyone and solve problems, but they are just co-creators exactly like you. Does this mean no one cares? No - the opposite. People take great care of each other. Because it is your responsibility - not someone else's. There is only you. You are the "organizer". It really is a membership. Legally, you are signing up as a member of the non-profit organization Gränslandet Ideell Förening and signing up to co-create the event. ❥ Bring: art, artful outfits, everything you need to survive for a week, cup, MOOP (trash) bag. Make sure your camp has: fire extinguisher, water bucket, first aid kit. ❥ No organizers - only co-creators. ❥ Who is responsible? You are. ❥ No audience. ❥ No spectators. ❥ Leave no trace. Everything you bring you must take out. Have a trash plan. So what is The Borderland? The Borderland is a collaborative, co-created participatory experimental community where we prototype our dreams. 3579 people gather to build a city together, dance on the border between dreams and reality, and afterwards leave no trace.
